Beaches

Strands, as beaches are known in Ireland, are numerous and generally empty! Usually clean with clear water, several strands boast the much valued Blue Flag. 2009 Blue Flag beaches in Co Mayo are as follows: Carramore, Old Head (Louisburgh) (22kms W Westport via R335), Bertra (Murrisk), Mulranny (18kms NW Newport via N59), Keel (R319 Achill Island), Keem (R319 Achill Island), Dugort (Achill Is) Golden Strand, Mullaghroe (Belmullet), and Ross (Killala).

Life guards are also prominent on several strands, so do heed the warning flags. Stick to the safer waters of Clew bay, the Atlantic strands could have dangerous currents and undertows!! Board and Kite surfing plus Board sailing take place at Carrowniskey strand on the Atlantic, so take great care if taking part. Recommended strands are Carrowmore, Old Head, and Bertra.
